Snorkelling in Destin

I picked a great day to go snorkelling here in Destin - clear blue skies, turquoise waters and a hot, fine day. Murray doesn't snorkel (well apart from the time Benn decked him out and took him in Ballina!), but he was happy to come along for the ride. It was a great deal - 3 hours out - 1 hour at the first beach location, then 1 hour dolphin watching, followed by 1 hour in another location, all for $34 per head. The price includes wet suit, flippers, face mask & snorkel, as well as unlimited free cold drinks (soda/soft drink & water). The views of the harbour area and surrounding beaches were beautiful, and as usual, the photos just don't do them justice.

Time to don the gear and get into the water. Hang on, this isn't very deep. The advice was to swim over to the rocks and there would be fish there. Ok. Hmm. Yes, I saw some fish, but little tiny ones.

That was pretty tame, but perhaps I have been spoilt with snorkelling in Cozumel, Great Barrier Reef and Key Largo??  Next stop the dolphins...they can't guarantee you will see them, but we were lucky. We saw two pods of 2-3 in each. How smoothly they glide in and out of the water. We watched from a distance until they drifted further out into the Gulf.

The next snorkelling location was pretty tame too, so we sat back and enjoyed watching the water craft and the excitement on the faces of a pair of honeymooners from NW Arkansas, when they realised they each found the same matching shell while snorkelling. They thought it was a good omen!
