Navarre Beach Pier

Yesterday was our last full day with the hire car, so we decided to make the most of the glorious day, and made one last trip to Navarre Beach. During our visit there last week we saw the Navarre Beach Pier from our cafe, but simply admired it as we sipped our chilled beer. This time we decided to walk the 0.5 km/1545 ft length of it. It is the longest pier in all of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico - it is 9 meters/30 feet above the water. It costs anyone over the age of 5  $1 for a daily pass to walk along it, and $7 a day to fish. Great income for the area. Locals can buy an annual pass to walk or fish.

The blue umbrellas are provided for guests at the hotel - it is their 'private beach' area
The water was a funny colour today - even though it was a Monday, there were a lot more people in swimming, surfing and paddle boarding than we have seen previously.

We had to laugh at a couple who take their baby son along fishing each week. The little guy stays in the cooler - he is 10 months old. Won't be long and he will be out fishing with mum and dad. Mum said the cooler was his favourite place and he was always well behaved.

Once we had our fill of the excitement of seeing fish being pulled in left, right and centre it was time to retreat to the bar overlooking the pier and try out the new Root Beer beer - 5.9% alcohol. Tasted like very sweet root beer - too sweet for my liking.

On the Navarre Causeway there is a flashing road sign cautioning drivers to slow down to 20 mph. There are shore birds nesting (American oyster catchers) in the sand dunes along both sides of the road. If you look closely in the top left photo of the collage at right, you will see a mature bird in the foreground, and a young fledgling to the rear. My final Destin blog yet to come...the Big Kahuna!
