Summer Fish Fry

Summer evenings on the lake are beautiful, but they are drawing to a close for us. Only two nights left. Last night we arranged a fish fry to enjoy our friends' company and also to eat the fish the men had caught and that have been so bountiful this summer. Our friends arrived at 5.15pm and were gone by 10pm. Frieda and Lenny had to drive home, so they were the first to leave. Thanks to the womenfolk we had five different salads to have with the fish, and then we finished off with strawberry shortcake for dessert. Even though it was still light, we lit a fire and enjoyed the ambiance - thanks to Milt for the firewood.

Frieda and Lenny had house guests all weekend, plus they had to drive home (about 15  minutes drive), so they left around 9pm. We won't see them again until next year, and this was only the second time we saw them here at the lake. Fortunately we also got to spend 3 days with them at their Mesa, Arizona home at the beginning of our trip this summer.
As you can see it is still light at 9pm as we wave goodbye to Frieda and Lenny
Dusk colours
After all the guest had gone I tried to capture the last dusk colours - this photo was taken at 10pm. Once again, the sky looked so beautiful, but my photo doesn't do it justice.

About an hour later, when it was darker, but still light enough to walk around the campground without a flashlight, we went for a walk to see if we could see some fireflies. We didn't find any at the back of the campground where Avalyn had seen them two nights earlier, and so we headed back to our RV. I was just about to go inside but took one last look at the lake, and wouldn't you know it, I saw a quick flash of golden light close to the water's edge, right at the back of our bedroom. Thinking that I was seeing things, I walked closer and Murray and I both saw it flash again. Yep, we had found one elusive firefly. A single one! Just for us. The nights are still too cool for them to be out in force yet, and sadly we will be gone before that happens. During the fish fry we got a call from our friends on the Ranch where we are headed next. They were trying to plan their calve branding and vaccination day and wondered if we could hang around for that on Friday July 5th. That is the day we are booked into our next campground, but as it is only 1 hour or so away from the ranch, we can join in the branding first, then head out the gate, have dinner in town en route, then check into the campground. Too easy.
