The following photos of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were taken from our campground in North Dakota, looking to the North. The first photo was taken at 11.45pm tonight, and the last one was taken 4 minutes later. I have just read that the phenomenon of the 'lights' peaks every 11 years, and that 2013 is one of those years. Also that the best time to see them is midnight local time. We spent 2 months in Alaska 2 summers ago and the only Northern Lights we saw were in paintings and in a special exhibition in the Fairbanks Museum. My one regret of that trip was not seeing the lights. I can now tick that off my bucket list! The photos might all look much the same, but if you look carefully, you will see they are all a bit different. We could see the shape of the lights moving and changing constantly. Such a thrill! My little Sony camera did ok - thanks for helping with its selection Benn and Daina! I used 'Scene Selection', then 'Hand-held twilight' - shoots low light scene with noise reduction, no tripod. Happy campers tonight. Click on the photos below to see them at their best. Enjoy.
