En Route to Destin, Florida

Route Lake Charles, Louisiana to Destin, Florida
Yes, I've been pretty slack on the blog, but if you were here in Florida where we are currently staying, you would understand why - it is such a relaxing place to be, and we are thoroughly enjoying the lazy lifestyle.

We left Lake Charles and made our way over the Mississippi River to our friends Cindy and Mike in Denham Springs, Louisiana which is just to the east of Baton Rouge, and north of New Orleans. We parked the RV in the yard of one of their homes, but spent most of our time with them. Mike prepared us some traditional southern fare - crawfish étouffée as an appetiser and served up some southern fried catfish. Cindy had set the table up with candle sticks and she baked a Hummingbird cake from scratch - using a recipe from an old housekeeping magazine. We felt very spoilt. The next day our other friends Diane and Ben were able to join us for lunch at Cindy and Mike's, and it was great to catch up with them all. Those four have been mates for years, but we met the four of them at a music festival in Mountain View, Arkansas in April 2009 and have caught up with them numerous times since.

Check out the Hummingbird cake! It was delicious.
These crawfish are cooked, but they sold fresh ones as well - comparable to a Yabbie in Australia
L-R Ben, Diane, Mike, Cindy (Sadie on her lap), Murray and moi - I set the camera timer and raced back
Beautiful beach at Biloxi where we stopped for lunch
We said our farewells and headed East, following the Gulf. We stopped for lunch at Biloxi, Mississippi (see photo above) and then drove via Mobile (Alabama) and Pensacola (Florida), enjoying our glimpses of the Gulf. We couldn't believe the scenery as we drove into our destination of Destin, Florida. If you look at the photo below, the tall building on the left of the photo is about a 2.6 km (1.5 mile) walk from our RV park. We had lunch in that colourful area under the building, and looked out to the white sandy beach you can see on the right. A few days later we drove to the sandy beach and walked the circumference (not very far!). But Destin is another story...
