Tolsona Wilderness Campground

Deformed Black Spruce
Pretty wildflowers line the highway
Is this what they call fireweed?
This is us turning into this campground
Here are our side by side sites - by the river

After a leisurely start, we drove out of Tok and headed SW along the Tok Cutoff (Alaska Hwy 1). The road certainly had some patched areas, and even one long area with road crews working, but it was nowhere near as nasty as some of the bone-shaking bits of road from Haines Junction to Tok. So long as you slow right down you shouldn't break an axle!

Once again the scenery was very beautiful but I chuckle whenever I see the Black Spruce trees - they look all deformed and the various shapes are quite amusing. They mainly grow in permafrost areas where regular spruce trees can't survive. However my favourite sight of the day was the Mama Moose escorting her baby across the road. Ahhh. What a good mum.

As it was a pleasant day, we found a picnic table en route and the 4 of us sat there and had our lunch. The mosquitoes thought WE made a nice lunch for them, and so we didn't sit around for long! Just down the road from our lunch stop was the little town of Glennallen, and 15 miles past there, on the road to Anchorage, we pulled into the Tolsona Wilderness Campground. I had read some reviews where several visitors thought this was the loveliest campground of their whole Alaska trip. We got sites together, right on the river's edge, and Murray got quite excited about the thought of throwing his fishing line in. As soon as we got hooked up to power & water, Eric & Murray did a trip into town in Eric's vehicle, and Murray bought himself a fishing licence. I'll keep you posted...
